Elizabeth Arden’s beauty industry pioneer and founder was ahead of her time. A keen businesswoman, Elizabeth Arden developed and produced her own cosmetic line while opening beauty salons worldwide. She promoted total beauty through daily skin care practices such as nutrition as well as aesthetic treatments – even creating and operating high-end spas!
Elizabeth Arden changed to Elizabeth Arden when she relocated to New York City in 1908. Soon thereafter, she established herself as an esteemed beauty expert using modern mass marketing strategies to introduce makeup into American households. While cosmetics had historically been associated with prostitutes and lower class women at that time, Arden used clever sales strategies to mainstream them and eventually owned 150 salons as well as several high-end spas by 1950.
In 1946, she branched out into thoroughbred horse racing and won the Kentucky Derby on one of her horses named Jet Pilot. She continued owning and operating salons until her death at age 81 in New York City on October 18, 1966.
