Calvin Richard Klein was born 19 November 1942 in the Bronx, New York and spent much of his time sketching dresses and suits while working in his father’s grocery store and tailor shop. Following graduation from high school he began work for Dan Millstein’s coat manufacturer to gain more insight into the fashion business before enrolling at Fashion Institute of Technology New York to study further before opening up his own company with partner Barry Schwartz.
Klein made his entry into the denim market in 1982 with low-rise jeans designed to keep athletes comfortable, which were both reversible and stretchy – creating an instantaneous success with ads featuring models such as Kate Moss and Marky Mark (then Mark Wahlberg). Klein’s marketing campaigns proved enormously effective at taking his brand to new levels of success.
The brand grew into other markets such as fragrances, eyewear and swimwear before eventually branching out into fragrances, eyewear and swimwear as well as sportswear and underwear for both men and women. When facing financial difficulty in the 1990s it was saved from bankruptcy thanks to multibillionaire David Geffen providing financial aid. Klein sold his company to Phillips Van Heusen Corp in 2003 in exchange for stake in its future royalties and some equity ownership of future sales proceeds.
