In 2007, Belgian schoolmates Jan Helskens and Wim De Veirman launched the GreenPan brand. Their goal was to produce cookware free from toxic fumes when overheated, production processes that use no perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), lead, or cadmium contamination, or which would otherwise release these elements during overheating. They accomplished this goal with Thermolon ceramic coating made from silane which does not require either PFAS or PFOA production processes during production.

GreenPan’s Thermolon coating does not contain PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), the chemical used to create Teflon and other nonstick surfaces such as Teflon. However, GreenPan may overstate its benefits of Thermolon by advertising that it is “toxin-free.” Notably, however, Silane, which reacts with oxidizing agents and causes skin, eyes, mucous membrane irritation as well as having a repulsive odor when overheated.

GreenPan cookware bases vary according to collection, with some having aluminum, hard-anodized, or stainless steel clad (3-ply). All GreenPan products are dishwasher and oven safe up to 500F; additionally, its handles feature an ergonomic arc design for easier gripping and control.

GreenPan pans fare well in our even heating rankings, which measures how evenly heat is spread across the bottom of a pan. However, their performance was less impressive in our hot and cold retention tests, where they lost heat more rapidly than other brands. Furthermore, GreenPan pans feature straight rims as opposed to flared ones which may trap food particles or make pouring sauces difficult.
