Jimmy Choo and Tamara Mellon founded this fashion label in 1996, quickly becoming a must-have with its chic styles and sophisticated looks. Its iconic stiletto shoes are instantly recognizable for those with an appreciation of high heels and drama.
Choo was born and raised in Penang, Malaysia where his father, a cobbler, inspired him to pursue his interest in footwear. After studying at Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, Choo opened a custom shoe boutique with his brother.
At the start of his career, Choo’s label was originally called Lucky Shoes; however in 1986 he rebranded it to Jimmy Choo and quickly gained notoriety – including being featured in Vogue magazine.
In 1990, Princess Diana donned Jimmy Choos for a photo op. As such, the label quickly gained international recognition and soon thereafter enjoyed celebrity endorsement from Princess Diana herself.
However, soon enough a rift formed between Choo and Mellon. While Choo preferred running his small shoe business, Mellon was more interested in expanding Jimmy Choo’s brand.
In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Equinox Holdings for $30 million. Mellon and co-creative director Sandra Choi remained with the label; she took on a new role as creative head.
