In the early days of e-commerce, Selkoe built Karmaloop into the premier destination for streetwear. He helped bring a constellation of small, independent streetwear brands into the mainstream, and he became a major cultural influencer.
Then, around 2012, Selkoe started to think bigger than just selling T-shirts and hats. He wanted to transform Karmaloop into a culture powerhouse, and he envisioned a cable channel that could replicate this generation’s MTV.
He hired former AMC TV executive Katie McEnroe to run KLTV, and he made Pharrell Williams creative director. The channel was supposed to feature original productions and movies that would relate to streetwear culture.
Those plans failed, and in May 2015, Karmaloop filed for bankruptcy. Investors Comvest Partners and CapX Partners stepped in, and the company was acquired by California-based Shiekh Shoes.
The deal will help relaunch the brand, but it will take time and effort to win back trust with customers. It will also be important to make sure that the brand is restocked with good merchandise.
