Nancy and Walter Katin opened Kanvas by Katin, a small boat cover business in Surfside, California in 1954. Soon enough their durable canvas boat covers were recognized by local surfers. When teenager Corky Carroll came in looking for wave riding trunks made by Walter for him to wear during waves riding lessons at Santa Monica Pier, word quickly spread throughout Surfside of their presence and soon enough the shop was overrun by eager young surfers looking for tailor-made Katin surf trunks.
As surfing became more and more popular, Kati’s cemented its place in the surf world by producing championship-winning trunks for surfers such as Shaun Tomson, Peter Townend and Reno Abelliro. After Walter passed away in 1967, Nancy continued the company and increased involvement by offering surfing scholarships as well as starting up Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge competitions.
